Stop! Don’t throw it away! Get paid for it instead!
There may be numerous items in your home, shed or garage that can be recycled.  Understandably though, recycling items can be intimidating.  Below are some insights on how to streamline this process, as well as make some money.
Recycling metal is an excellent way to help manage the quantity of materials that end up in landfills.  There are many standard items in your home that can be recycled, and recycling centers will actually pay you for these.   The amount you will be paid depends on the type of material and the current market value.  For example, clean copper (referred to as No. 1 Copper) can pay around $1.60 per lb.; insulated wire pays around $.37 per lb.; and electric motors pay around $.13 per lb.  It is amazing how fast the money adds up.
Some of the more common household items that can be recycled are:  Frayed extension cords; Christmas lights; Metal lawn chairs; Swing sets; Bicycles and tricycles; Car batteries; Wire hangers; Aluminum cans; Garbage disposals; Water Heaters; Computer towers (not monitor) and laptops.  Keep in mind, if it has metal, wire, or a motor, it most likely will be able to be recycled.
When looking for a recycling center, there are a couple of excellent options in the quad cities.  One location is Yavapai Metal Recyclers, 2220 N. Concord Drive, Dewey.  The metals they accept are:  copper, brass, steel, appliances, radiators, insulated wire, aluminum cans, used vehicles, steel wire, as well as anything metal except fuel tanksIn the center of Prescott, you can use Kuhles Salvage at 219 E. Navajo Dr.
U-Pick-It, at 10440 E. Valley Rd., Prescott Valley, is also a good option for recycling automobiles and steel.  They accept metals which are iron-based, such as the material found in cars, household appliances and construction beams.  For more information on pricing and how this service works, call them at 928-443-1765.  For automobiles, they will have the vehicle towed and then pay you cash for the car.  Towing is free if the vehicle is located in Yavapai or Coconino County.
Understandably, it can be intimidating if you are not educated on the different types of metals and what you need to do to prepare the item to be recycled.  A simple phone call will answer your questions.  Call the recycle center of your choice and ask specific questions regarding the items in question.  For further instruction, visit www.YavapaiMetalRecycling.net to watch videos on how to recycle various items.
